Vizzio Technologies Fiasco: What Happened to the AI Startup's Founder and Former CEO Jon Lee?

By

Vizzio Technologies has announced a leadership change, appointing chief marketing officer David Lee as its interim CEO, suggesting that founder and CEO Jon Lee has stepped down.

Jon Lee of Vizzio Technologies

According to Tech in Asia, the announcement came after Tech in Asia revealed Jon Lee's admission that he lied about his PhD in computer science from the University of Cambridge.

In a previous interview with Tech in Asia, Jon, 53, cited his intention to find a replacement for his role to facilitate a swift departure from Singapore and continue working on Vizzio Technologies from a more discreet position.

Days before the Tech in Asia expose was published, Kai-Fu Lee, an investor in Vizzio and a prominent figure in the AI space, quit the company's board.

Vizzio's board of directors initially voiced their support for Jon following the exposé that revealed he faked his credentials 23 years ago and repeated the act in recent times, saying Jon had already informed the board about his lack of a doctor's degree.

"We are resolved to support Jon and to continue Vizzio's mission and the future of our business earmarked by the many successful and proven projects since its inception," the company said in a statement released last month.

Leadership Transition in Vizzio Technologies

But after a few days, Vizzio Technologies released another statement announcing the leadership transition, positioning it as part of its strategic vision for the future.

David Lee, the newly appointed interim CEO, will oversee strategic leadership, stakeholder relations, and financial management, among other duties.

According to Tech in Asia, Jon Lee's current role in the startup is unclear. However, The Strait Times reported that Jon has a new role overseeing research and development at the Singapore-based AI company, which creates 3D interactive maps and digital objects.
