Bankwest's Digital Banking Transition Prompts Closure Of 60 Western Australia Branches

By

Bankwest has announced plans to close all its branches in Western Australia by October, shifting its focus towards online banking.

This decision entails converting 15 regional branches into Commonwealth Bank of Australia branches.

Now, the decision to shift to digital banking is prompted by a shift in customer behavior, with the majority of transactions now occurring digitally, rendering physical branches less frequented.

Despite the company's emphasis on digital services, concerns arise, particularly in regional areas where access to banking services may become more challenging.

"I understand this will be difficult news for some of our customers and Bankwest is introducing a range of support measures to help our customers who are regular branch users carefully through this transition," said Bankwest General Manager, Jason Chan.

Besides Bankwest's pledge to support customers through this transition, Chan also clarifies that Bankwest is clearly focused on the needs of its regular branch users at this time.

Unfortunately, Bankwest's customers aren't the only ones disappointed. Criticism ensues as some politicians accuse the bank of reneging on its commitment not to close branches until 2026.

Instead, Australian politicians advocate for alternative solutions, such as utilizing post offices to fill the potential gaps in banking services.

"If you make a promise to the Australian people and you're the biggest bank in the country, well, follow through with it, otherwise you don't have a social licence to operate in this country," said Nationals Leader David Littleproud.

Amidst the debate, Bankwest reaffirms its "good intent" over branch closures and ensures job continuity for its staff.
