Huawei recently announced that it has inked a patent licensing agreement with Amazon, which resolves pending legal disputes between them.
The Chinese telecommunications giant's agreement with Amazon covers Huawei's patented wifi and video playback technologies, though specific terms remain undisclosed.
Alan Fan from Huawei's intellectual property rights department highlights the importance of international cooperation in patent licensing despite geopolitical tensions.
"Patent licensing expands the number of companies that can use what otherwise would be proprietary technologies, which, in turn, provides consumers with more innovative products and services."
Amazon also acknowledged the multi-year patent licensing agreement, pointing to the two tech giants' respect for each other.
"Amazon respects Huawei's worldwide patent portfolio, innovations, and contributions to the standardization process. Amazon also respects Huawei's efforts to license its patents to companies like Amazon, which frequently use industry technical standards when inventing new products and services for customers," said Amazon's Vice President of IP, Scott Hayden.
Now, what does this patent licensing agreement mean for Huawei?
The Huawei and Amazon deal allows both companies to use each other's patented technologies without facing legal disputes or infringement claims. This means granting each company access to the other's proprietary technologies, fostering innovation, and enabling the development of new products and services without fearing patent infringement litigation.
In addition to the Amazon deal, Huawei also entered a cross-licensing patent agreement with Vivo, focusing on essential patents for 5G cellular standards.
Huawei maintains similar licensing arrangements with Xiaomi and Oppo.
