HelloFresh Stock Tumbles 42% as Earnings Forecast for 2024 Outlook 'Far Worse' Than Expected

By

Shares of HelloFresh experienced a drastic decline of 42% on Friday morning, marking its most significant single-day drop to date. This plummet follows the company's announcement of a bleak outlook for its 2024 earnings.

HelloFresh, a German meal-kit delivery service, announced that its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) for fiscal 2023 are expected to reach 448 million euros, down from the previous year's 477 million euros.

However, the more concerning projection lies in its 2024 forecast, with adjusted EBITDA anticipated to fall between 350 million and 400 million euros. This decline underscores the company's struggle to maintain growth and profitability amidst challenging market conditions.

'Disappointing' Outlook

Analysts at UBS described the newly unveiled outlook as "far worse" than initially anticipated, emphasizing the disappointing growth and elevated customer acquisition costs that are expected to persist into 2024.

Similarly, Deutsche Bank labeled the 2024 outlook as "disappointing," highlighting the removal of previously announced targets for 2025 due to what HelloFresh referred to as a "very different operating environment." These assessments from financial experts reflect the severity of HelloFresh's predicament and the uncertainty surrounding its future performance.

While HelloFresh initially thrived as a pandemic beneficiary, with shares soaring in 2021, its value has since dwindled significantly. The company's shares experienced a 70% decline in 2022 and a further 30% drop in 2023, reflecting the broader challenges of meal-kit delivery services in adapting to post-pandemic consumer behaviors and economic pressures.

Regulatory Scrutiny

In addition to financial setbacks, HelloFresh has faced regulatory scrutiny, further impacting its performance. The company was fined for sending customers over 80 million spam emails and texts, tarnishing its reputation and potentially contributing to a decline in its customer base.

Furthermore, as pandemic restrictions ease and living costs rise, HelloFresh has seen a reduction in its subscriber numbers, dropping from over 8.5 million in 2022 to 7.1 million. These challenges underscore HelloFresh's complexities in sustaining its business model and retaining its market share in the fiercely competitive food delivery industry.

Looking ahead, HelloFresh acknowledges the need to re-evaluate its business strategy. Due to the evolving operating environment, the company conceded that it is unlikely to achieve its announced mid-term revenue target of €10 billion by 2025.
