Nestlé Recalls 440,500 Starbucks Mugs Over Incidents of Burns, Lacerations Reported by Consumers

By

Nestlé USA has initiated a recall of 440,500 Starbucks-branded mugs following reports of injuries caused by burns or cuts, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on Thursday.

The recall affects metallic-coated ceramic mugs sold as part of 2023 holiday gift sets under the Starbucks brand. They were not sold in Starbucks stores but were part of various gift sets sold by major retailers.

Metallic Starbucks Mugs Caused Injuries

The mugs, sold in 11 and 16-ounce sizes, were priced between $10 and $20, depending on the specific gift set.

These sets were available for purchase online and in-store at major retailers including Target, Walmart, and Nexcom, a military retail outlet.

There have been a total of 12 incidents involving these mugs overheating or breaking, resulting in 10 reported injuries, according to a press release from Nestlé.

The reported injuries include severe burns and blisters on fingers or hands, as well as one incident where a person's finger was cut. One injury required medical attention.

CPSC Urges Prompt Discontinuation as Nestlé Offers Refunds

Nestlé USA, the manufacturer of the mugs, stated that the issues came to light when consumers contacted the company. In response, Nestlé took immediate action and is cooperating with the CPSC on the recall.

"The quality, safety and integrity of Nestlé USA products remain our number one priority. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this action represents to both our consumers and retail customers," Nestlé said in a statement posted online.

The CPSC emphasized that the hazardous situation arises when the mugs are microwaved or filled with hot liquids, which can cause them to overheat or break, posing a risk of burns, cuts, or other injuries.

Consumers who have bought these Starbucks-branded holiday mugs are urged to discontinue their use immediately and return them to the original point of purchase for a full refund in cash or a gift card. Additionally, refunds can be obtained through Nestlé's website.
