Elon Musk's X has announced its financial support for Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill, a Canadian doctor who previously faced scrutiny from regulators due to her COVID-19-related tweets.
Elon Musk's X Is Supporting a Vaccine-Doubting Canadian Doctor
In a post to the X News account on Sunday, the social media company, formerly known as Twitter, expressed its commitment to defending the Canadian doctor's right to free speech against what it perceives as government-backed attempts to silence her.
In 2021, Kulvinder Kaur Gill, a pediatric specialist from Brampton, Ontario, received warnings from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario regarding her tweets, including one saying COVID-19 vaccination was unnecessary.
In its post, the company wrote: "X is proud to help defend Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill against the government-supported efforts to cancel her speech... Because she spoke out publicly on Twitter (now X) in opposition to the Canadian and Ontario governments' COVID lockdown efforts and vaccination mandates, she was harassed by the legacy media, censored by prior Twitter management, and subjected to investigations and disciplinary proceedings by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario."
"Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and a critical defense against totalitarianism in all forms. We must do whatever we can to protect it, and at X, we will always fight to protect your right to speak freely," the company added.
Canadian Doctor Asks X Owner Elon Musk For Help
Earlier this week, Kulvinder Kaur Gill tagged Elon Musk in a post asking him for help, saying she owed about $300,000 in costs due in four days.
According to The Canadian Press, the Canadian doctor has an ongoing crowdfunding campaign to raise $300,000 to help pay for legal fees related to a lawsuit she initiated against what she called a "malicious online smear campaign."
Fox News reported that Gill tried to clear her name through legal proceedings against the people responsible for the campaign. However, she lost and was ordered to pay $1.2 million in October 2022.
After she appealed the decision, the Canadian doctor was ordered to pay around $300,000 late last month, reportedly due tomorrow. The company said Musk vowed to help Gill, resulting in X paying the remainder of her crowdfunding campaign.
"When Elon Musk learned earlier this week about her crowdfunding campaign to pay the judgment (https://givesendgo.com/kulvinder), he pledged to help. X will now fund the rest of Dr. Gill's campaign so that she can pay her $300,000 judgment and her legal bills," X noted.
The company will also help the Canadian doctor appeal the College's "cautions" that were placed on her permanent public record following the disciplinary proceedings.
