Chinese Businessman to Appeal Death Sentence For Murdering His Nigerian Girlfriend

The decision of the court in Kano state to impose the death sentence underscores the severity of the offense. According to BBC, Ummu Kulthum Sani, a 22-year-old university student, was found with multiple stabbed wounds in her room in September 2022.

Frank Geng Quarong was also discovered in her room after he stabbed her several times there. Sani's murder shocked Nigerians. The 49-year-old Chinese businessman, who was sentenced to death by hanging, has 90 days to appeal against the verdict. In Nigeria, death sentences are rare.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Sadiq Sani, the victim's brother, described the death sentence handed down by the court as justice. Sadiq noted that whoever murdered anyone deserved to be killed, too.

Chinese Businessman Working in Nigeria at the Time of Murder

Described as kind and cheerful, Ummu Kulthum Sani, an agriculture undergraduate, had been in a relationship with Frank Geng Quarong since 2020 after meeting him at a shopping mall.

The Chinese businessman was in Nigeria working for a Nigerian textile firm at the time. According to neighbors, Quarong was knocking heavily on the gate of the Sani family home on the night of the murder in September 2022.

After Sani's mother opened the gate, the Chinese businessman pushed her aside, rushed straight to his Nigerian girlfriend's room, and then locked it from the inside. Sani shouted and cried, but before anyone could break down the door to help her, she had been stabbed several times.

The young woman died later in hospital. Family friend Ahmad Abdullahi said the couple had issues before the incident as Sani "was no longer interested," but Quarong "didn't want to let go."

According to BBC, over 3,400 people are on death row in Nigeria, with the last execution happening in 2012. In Nigeria, death sentences are rare.
