Nintendo announced the closure of two major online services at 4:00 p.m. PDT on Apr. 8. This will affect various models, including the New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Wii U Deluxe, and Wii U Basic.
This move, however, sparked concerns among thousands of players about the fate of their games, according to The Sun.
About Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Online Services Shutdown
The services will shut down simultaneously worldwide, with the exact time varying depending on the time zone. After this time, many online features will become unavailable.
In the announcement, it was stated that nearly all online functions on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U would cease to function. This includes online gameplay for most games and services like Spotpass and the 3DS' Badge Arcade.
Additionally, downloading DLC for certain games will no longer be possible.
Games purchased before the shutdown can still be downloaded afterward, except for DLC packs purchased within the games. Nintendo assures players that this will remain possible for the foreseeable future.
Features like StreetPass will still be available for Nintendo 3DS family systems, as they use local communication.
The Pokémon Bank and Pokémon Transporter services on 3DS will continue to function after the shutdown. Using these services, players can transfer Pokémon from their 3DS to other platforms, such as the Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo thanks players for their support and apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the discontinuation of online services.
