NHTSA Launches Investigation into Ford SUV Recall Over Fire Hazard Concerns — Is Your Vehicle at Risk?

By

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into a recent recall affecting Ford Broncos and Escapes amid concerns over potential fire hazards.

This move comes in response to an error involving cracked fuel injectors, which the NHTSA warns could lead to gas leaks and engine fires.

The investigation, announced two days after the recall was made public, aims to address safety concerns surrounding approximately 42,652 SUVs produced in 2022 and 2023.

Ford Issues Recall on Broncos, Escapes over Fuel Leak

The recall primarily affects models equipped with 1.5-liter engines. Specifically, 22,270 Bronco Sport vehicles from 2022 and 2023, as well as 20,382 Escape vehicles from 2022, are included in the recall.

While Ford has taken steps to remedy the issue, offering affected owners the installation of a drain tube and a free engine control software update, concerns persist regarding the recall's efficacy.

The software update is designed to detect a pressure drop in the fuel injection system and disable the high-pressure fuel pump, among other measures.

However, the NHTSA points out that the remedy does not include the replacement of the cracked fuel injector, potentially leaving the underlying issue unresolved.

Despite the seriousness of the safety concerns, as of the latest reports, no injuries associated with the recall have been reported to the NHTSA. Nonetheless, owners are urged to take precautionary measures.

Is Your Vehicle Affected?

Affected vehicle owners are advised to consult with their local Ford or Lincoln dealer for further guidance. Ford began notifying owners about the recall on April 1, following notification to dealers on March 11.

Additionally, concerned individuals can verify if their vehicle is affected by referencing the NHTSA website or contacting Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
