According to Billboard's latest report, SAG-AFTRA, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Disney Music Group reached a tentative multiyear agreement.

This deal includes guardrails for AI technologies across the music industry. It is considered the success of the SAG-AFTRA National Code of Fair Practice for Sound Recordings.

The new deal received unanimous approval from the American labor union's executive committee this April. If the agreement is ratified by member vote, it will cover the period from January 1, 2021, until December 31, 2026.

SAG-AFTRA explained that the deal will require digital replicas of member musicians and other artists to receive "clear and conspicuous" consent before release.

Compensation should also be offered to the artist, and specific details of the AI sound's use must be publicized, as reported by Mashable SE Asia.

SAG-AFTRA Deal's Other Inclusions

Aside from the requirements mentioned above, the new deal between SAG-AFTRA and major labels also includes increased minimums, increased streaming revenue percentage, and health and retirement improvements.

"This agreement ensures that our members are protected," said SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.

"SAG-AFTRA stands firm in the belief that while technology can enhance the creative process, the essence of music must always be rooted in genuine human expression and experience," he added.

Duncan shared his excitement, saying that they look forward to working with industry partners to create an environment where technologies elevate, not diminish, artists.
