A senior editor at NPR has been suspended after writing an essay for an online news site.
In the essay, the editor expressed his belief that the network has lost the trust of the American people due to a perceived liberal bias in its coverage, according to the outlet's report.
NPR Suspends Network's Liberal Bias Whistleblower
Uri Berliner received a five-day suspension without pay, as reported by NPR on Tuesday. The revelation surfaced precisely one week following Berliner's public assertion in an essay for The Free Press, an online news publication, that NPR's coverage had been influenced by a "liberal bias," resulting in a gradual erosion of the outlet's credibility among its audience.
NPR reported that the essay sparked renewed criticism from prominent conservatives and led to newsroom leadership implementing monthly internal reviews of the network's coverage.
Berliner's essay also stirred up strong reactions among his colleagues and drew criticism towards NPR's new chief executive, Katherine Maher, due to her previous social media activity.
However, NPR claimed thast Maher's social media posts were written prior to her appointment as chief executive of NPR, and she was not involved in the news industry at that time.
NPR also noted that although she oversaw the business operations of the nonprofit, she did not have any involvement in its editorial decision-making.
In a statement, Maher emphasized that in America, every individual has the right to express their opinions freely as private citizens.
NPR Faces Criticism for 'Bias Reporting'
According to NY Times, some employees at the public radio network were surprised by Berliner's public criticism of the broadcaster, and a few have expressed a loss of trust in him due to his comments. Last week, Berliner mentioned to the Times that he did not contact the network before publishing his essay.
Following the essay, NPR faced criticism from prominent conservatives and Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, who accused the network of biased reporting.
Christopher Rufo, a conservative activist, specifically focused on Maher for her past social media posts, which were made before she joined the network. This was her first job at a news organization.
One of the posts that received attention was a tweet from 2020 that criticized Trump for his views on racial background, according to USA Today.
In a recent post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump once again emphasized his ongoing argument regarding NPR's government funding.
