A woman with a unique appearance alleges that TJ Maxx did not hire her due to her tattoos and piercings.
Ash Putnam expressed her frustrations in a widely shared TikTok video after she submitted her job application to the off-price retailer.
TJ Maxx Refutes Allegation
However, instead of receiving a personal response, she received an automated email stating that she would not be considered for the position, without any explanation provided by the company, according to NY Post.
Believing that her noticeable body art, such as the face with horns on her neck and her large silver ring septum piercing, may have influenced the decision, Putnam decided to approach the store and inquire about why she wasn't offered the opportunity.
"I hate that my tattoos are such a defining factor for me getting a job or not," she expressed in a recent TikTok video.
Putnam, a resident of California, shared that she visited the store to inquire about the reason behind not being hired. According to her, the hiring manager explained that she lacked sufficient experience.
The hiring manager firmly stated that her tattoos had no impact on the rejection. TJ Maxx did not provide a response when contacted for a comment.
Putnam remained unconvinced and expressed their dissatisfaction on TikTok. Some commentators suggested that her attitude might have played a role, rather than solely focusing on her tattoos.
Some speculated that her tattoos may have been a factor in the rejection. Based on experts, recruiters are more likely to prioritize the personality of a prospective candidate rather than focusing on whether tattoos can impact their chances of being hired.
Netizens Argue that Putnam's Tattoo Affected Her Application
Putnam's video gained an impressive 7.4 million views, capturing the attention of many.
"HR supervisor here," a commenter stated. "It's highly unlikely that any company would trust you to represent them in front of customers, especially a reputable one like TJ Maxx."
According to another individual, who claimed to have experience as a hiring manager for the store, they mentioned that facial piercings and tattoos could be a factor. Putnam's approach faced criticism from other content creators.
Ivy Johnson, who also boasts numerous tattoos, shared that she had prior experience in the corporate world as a hiring manager before venturing into her own apothecary business.
"Your tattoos have a strong presence," she remarked. According to her, customer-facing positions don't receive a positive response.
While there was no concrete evidence that Ash's TJ Maxx rejection was related to her outer look, thousands of people who commented on her TikTok were eager to suggest that her tattoos disqualified her for the client-facing job at the vanilla retailer, as per Daily Mail.
