Business Insider reported that Alphabet's first quarter earnings this 2024 were blockbuster, surpassing analysts' predictions. Google's stocks also soared, impressing many people.
Specifically, Google reported a 15% YoY (year-on-year) revenue hike and issued its first dividend of 20 cents per share. CEO Sundar Pichai boasted about their achievement, telling analysts that Google is in a great position for the next AI innovation wave and opportunity.
He reminded them that Google has been an AI-first company since 2016. Experts said that Google's latest earnings reports are much needed by Sundar Pichai since the CEO there have been calls for him to step down.
Calls for Sundar Pichai To Step Down
According to First Post, Google was criticized for its Gemini AI chatbot. The company's co-founder, Sergey Brin, admitted that they couldn't adequately test the AI chatbot before launching it.
"We definitely messed up on the image generation, and I think it was mostly due to, just like, not thorough testing," he explained.
The issues with Gemini include racially skewed image responses and biased answers to informational queries. Because of this, Google suspended the Gemini app's image generation feature, which led to a significant drop in the company's market value.
The Gemini controversy made many people believe that Google is lagging in the ongoing AI race. Because of this, calls for Sundar Pichai to resign intensified.
