Google has conducted layoffs affecting teams working on projects like Flutter, Dart, and Python before its annual developer conference, I/O, in May, according to a report by TechCrunch.

The layoffs are part of broader organizational changes aimed at enhancing efficiency, streamlining operations, and aligning resources with significant product priorities.

Google Layoffs Flutter, Dart, and Python Teams

The restructuring is intended to eliminate bureaucracy and provide employees with more opportunities to contribute to projects and company priorities, according to the tech giant's spokesperson, Alex García-Kummert.

Google noted that the layoffs were not company-wide but strategic reorganizations, a routine part of business operations. This means that laid off employees will still be able to apply for other open positions within Google.

Reports from affected employees on social media platforms revealed the impact of the layoffs across multiple teams. A post from a Product Manager in the Flutter and Dart community indicated that several teams were affected, leading to disruptions in ongoing projects.

Despite the layoffs, Google remains focused on upcoming events like I/O, with reassurances that Flutter will unveil new updates during the conference.

Additionally, a Reddit post highlighted the impact on the Python team, particularly those managing internal Python runtimes and toolchains. The layoffs reportedly affected multiple core developers and steering council members.

WARN Notice

While Google did not disclose specific figures, a WARN notice filed on April 24 revealed that 50 employees across three locations in Sunnyvale would be affected by layoffs, according to TechCrunch.

Google stated that affected employees would receive support, including opportunities to explore alternative roles within or outside the company, access to outplacement services, and severance packages.
