An error on Cartier's website regarding the pricing of a pair of gold-and-diamond earrings turned out to be a significant financial setback for the high-end jewelry retailer.

Rogelio Villarreal, from Mexico, shared on social media platform X that while casually browsing Instagram, he stumbled upon a pair of earrings with an incredibly low price.

Cartier Mispriced Luxury Earrings, Bought by Mexican Man

The jewelry, which usually costs over $13,000 was unexpectedly listed for sale at a significantly lower price of approximately $13.

It seems that Cartier accidentally left out three zeros, purely by mistake. After clicking to purchase the earrings.

Villarreal unintentionally initiated a lengthy dispute with the luxury retailer that even caught the attention of public figures.

Cartier initially attempted to cancel the order and make amends with Villarreal by offering a bottle of champagne and a leather accessory as an apology for the inconvenience caused.

However, Villarreal found the offer to be unsatisfactory and decided to bring the matter to Mexico's federal consumer protection agency.

Villareal informed the New York Times that Cartier had notified him that his order had been completed.

"The war has come to an end. Cartier is in compliance," he stated in a post on April 22.

Villareal's Story Garners Mixed Opinion

What ensued was a lengthy exchange where he claims Cartier proposed an alternative instead of the jewelry, while Mexican officials supported his stance that the company should uphold the advertised price.

Villarreal was thrilled to finally receive the earrings last week, at the price he had negotiated.

He couldn't contain his excitement and decided to share the moment with his followers by posting a video online of himself unboxing the merchandise.

However, he quickly became weary of the constant public scrutiny, realizing that appearances can be deceiving.

In an attempt to shift the focus, he expressed his frustration on Monday, stating, "Let's discuss other topics, as I'm tired of my earrings being the sole aspect of my personality that people recognize."

Some critics voiced their disapproval of Villarreal, suggesting that he capitalized on what they perceived as a genuine error made by the high-end jewelry company.

There were suggestions that he should return the earrings or fulfill his tax obligations, according to Fox News.
