Martinelli's Apple Juice Recalled as High Arsenic Levels Raise Health Worries

By

Martinelli's apple juice has been recalled from major retailers across the US, including Target, Whole Foods, Publix, Kroger, and Winn-Dixie.

The recall stems from concerns over high levels of arsenic, a toxic substance that can pose serious health risks to consumers.

According to a report from USA Today, the recall affects one lot of 1-liter bottles with expiration dates of either Mar. 9, 2026 or Mar. 10, 2026.

The affected juice was sent to stores between Mar. 13, 2023, and Sept. 27, 2023, with the majority shipped before Jul. 28, 2023.

Tests Reveal Alarming Amounts of Arsenic on Recalled Apple Juice

The New York Post reported that the State of Maryland conducted tests on a sample from the recalled lot and found that it contained arsenic levels exceeding the guidance set by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Arsenic exposure can lead to severe health issues, including cancer, congenital disabilities, diabetes, and heart problems. The World Health Organization warns that acute arsenic poisoning can cause immediate symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, with potentially fatal outcomes in extreme cases.

The FDA had previously lowered the industry action level for inorganic arsenic in apple juice from 23 parts per billion (ppb) to 10 ppb in June 2023. However, the Maryland Department of Health's test results showed 11.6 ppb for inorganic arsenic in Martinelli's March 2023 production lot, surpassing the new guidance level.

Although no illnesses have been reported thus far due to consuming the recalled juice, Martinelli's has issued a voluntary recall as a precautionary measure. The company urges consumers who have purchased the affected product to discontinue its use and discard it immediately.

This recall follows similar actions taken by other beverage companies. Due to various issues, PepsiCo recently recalled Schweppes Zero Sugar Ginger Ale and Mug Root Beer, further highlighting the importance of quality control and consumer safety in the food and beverage industry.

For consumers seeking refunds or additional information, Martinelli's has provided a hotline at 1-800-662-1868.
