Over 1,100 flights faced delays or cancellations on Monday at Denver International Airport due to strong wind gusts sweeping across the state.
Denver International Airport Flight Delays
By approximately 5 p.m., there were 145 more flights that experienced delays and eight additional flights that were canceled.
This brings the total number of delayed flights to 1,065 and canceled flights to 50 due to the presence of strong winds on Monday.
The Denver Post reported that incoming flights experienced an average delay of one hour and 18 minutes.
Based on flight tracking data from FlightAware, departing flights experienced an average delay of one hour and four minutes.
During the time frame of 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, a total of 162 flights experienced delays and three flights were unfortunately canceled due to strong winds, as reported by FlightAware's MiseryMap.
Several airlines, including United, Southwest, JetBlue, Mesa, CommuteAir, SkyWest, Frontier, Delta,Allegiant Air, Air Canada, Key Lime Air, Lufthansa, Volaris, and American as well as Alaska Airlines, have experienced delays or cancellations, as reported by FlightAware.
Strong Winds Forecasted
Forecasters at the National Weather Service said wind gusts at DIA are expected to reach up to 45 mph on Monday. Strong winds are expected to continue until Tuesday night, with gusts reaching speeds of up to 49 mph.
In the morning, strong winds caused an overhead sign to fall onto Interstate 25, resulting in delays for the southbound morning commute.
Meanwhile, Xcel had already received numerous reports of power outages in the Denver metro area on Monday morning.
According to KDVR, Denver International Airport issued a travel alert at 8 a.m., notifying passengers of the windy conditions and advising them to verify their flight details and airline status.
Strong wind gusts are expected across Colorado, with speeds potentially reaching up to 80 mph on Monday.
