Google made its intent not to renew the lease of its largest office space in San Francisco upon its expiry in April 2025.

The San Francisco Chronicle first reported on the announcement Tuesday (May 7), with the company revealing its plans to vacate its 300,000-square-foot (27,870.91-square-meter) office space at One Market Plaza's Spear Tower and downsize and consolidate its Bay Area presence by relocating to a smaller location at 345 Spear Street nearby, where the company also has offices in.

According to Google, the move reflected its implementation of remote work and flexible schedules since the COVID-19 pandemic, and at the same time, its commitment to its "long-term presence in San Francisco."

Tenants Leaving One Market Plaza

Google was the latest of several tenants leaving One Market Plaza after banking firm Visa also announced in 2023 that it would also leave the building.

Google spokesperson Ryan Lamont told the Chronicle that it shifted its focus on "investing in real estate efficiently" in order to get in with the current trend of a "hybrid workforce."

On the other hand, the SF Business Times reported that Spear Tower's owners, Paramount and Blackstone, got an extension on their $975 million loan for the building last January, and Google actually delayed its announcement.
