The Chevrolet Malibu will soon be discontinued as General Motors further embraces EVs. This means that GM is killing the last sedan of the brand. General Motors announced this around 10 years after unveiling the most recent Malibu.
Chevrolet Malibu Discontinued
According to ABC 12 News, the Chevrolet Malibu is considered to be the last sedan of GM's biggest-selling brand. General Motors confirmed that this iconic car will be discontinued in 2024.
Specifically, GM said the Chevrolet Malibu production will be permanently halted in November. This is because the Fairfax Assembly Plant, which manufactures Malibu vehicles, will be reconfigured.
Once the Kansas City-based manufacturing plant's reconfiguration is completed, General Motors will use it to produce a new generation of the Chevrolet Bolt EV.
Since the Chevrolet Malibu will be discontinued, the mainstream GM brand will start focusing on selling the two-seat sports car Corvette, SUVs, and trucks in the U.S. market.
GM To Focus on Chevrolet Bolt
Quartz reported that GM will focus on the Chevrolet Bolt EV once Malibu is discontinued. However, it is still unclear if the Chevy EV will be mass-produced. General Motors will build the electric car on its Ultium platform, which is currently having difficulties.
A GM spokesperson said that in addition to Malibu, Cadillac XT4 production will also temporarily pause after January 2025. General Motors said that the discontinuation of Malibu and the pause in Cadillac XT4 production would likely result in mass layoffs.
But, the automaker said that affected employees will be supported according to the provisions of the UAW-GM agreement. Some of the affected employees can get their jobs back once productions resume.
GM said these staff will be transferred to Cadillac XT4 and Chevrolet Bolt EV productions, which will be conducted on the same assembly line at Fairfax Assembly Plant.
