A new report claims California's secret gas tax hike could soon arrive. A Republican state senator shared her concerns about it, describing it as a "tax on the tax." But should Americans really be worried?
California's Secret Gas Tax Hike Could Happen
According to Fox News, a little-known state air quality regulator report claims that a secret gas tax hike could soon come because of a longstanding emissions reduction program in California.
The report stated that a 50-cent increase in gasoline prices is expected to happen within two years in the state. California's primary environmental regulator CARB (California Air Resources Board) already warned that gas prices could increase by 50 cents per gallon in 2025.
CARB shared this detail back in September 2023, saying that the 50-cent gas price increase could happen yearly to aid in clean air efforts. Officials said the price hike they refer to doesn't include the existing gas tax.
About California Secret Gas Tax Hike
Republican State Sen. Janet Nguyen said the secret gas tax increase would penalize almost all Californian residents. She added that the tax would significantly affect middle-class and low-income people since they couldn't afford gas.
"No one knows about this. I think people just think it's a tax, so they don't know the difference between the carbon tax versus the state tax. It's almost like a tax on the tax," said Nguyen via The Daily Mail UK.
The report regarding the secret gas tax hike arrives as CARB finalizes its new policies, which mandate a rapid transition from traditional gas-powered vehicles to zero-emission alternative modes of transportation.
