Supermarkets Under Scrutiny As Cost Of Living Pressures Mount
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - MARCH 19: Woolworths signage outside one of its supermarkets on March 19, 2024 in Melbourne, Australia. Australia's two major supermarket chains, Coles and Woolworths, have come under scrutiny for their role in the cost of living crisis in the country, with both companies significantly increasing their profits during the pandemic while consumers faced rising living costs, local media reports said. Former cabinet minister Craig Emerson is leading a government inquiry into supermarket pricing practices, while former ACCC chair Allan Fels is conducting a separate investigation in collaboration with the Australian Council of Trade, ABC News said. Several Woolworths stores across Queensland have empty shelves. According to The Guardian, the case is particularly evident in Brisbane and the state's southeast due to what officials label a "terrible IT problem."

In return, social media platforms witnessed a surge in complaints from frustrated customers, with individuals expressing disappointment at the sight of empty shelves.

In response to customer criticisms, Woolworths is apologizing to customers affected by the shortages.

Woolworths Stocks in Warehouses

During a Queensland parliament inquiry into supermarket pricing, Woolworth's chief commercial officer, Paul Harker, disclosed that the issue stems from a botched "warehouse management system upgrade."

This has caused delays in restocking stores in Brisbane and its surrounding areas.

Harker acknowledged the disruption and inconvenience caused to customers and admitted that they, too, are not happy about the situation. Ongoing efforts are underway to rectify the issue and maintain commitments to suppliers.

While purchase limits are not in place, certain stores may stock less fresh produce, milk, and chicken than usual.

To make up for their empty shelves, Woolworths pledge to donate unused warehouse stock to food banks and charities to prevent waste.

This is the second time Woolworths has received backlash online. The first instance involved its employees criticizing its perceived "woke" stance during Australia Day, as reported by VCPost.
