Chinese Restaurants To Lend Food Takeaway Containers

Recently, Greeners Action surveyed how many Chinese restaurants are willing to take part in lunchbox lending for takeaway orders. Based on the results they acquired, almost 70% of them said they wanted to participate.

The survey comes as the Chinese government promotes takeaway container borrowing services in the country. Officials said that this effort could further reduce plastic usage.

"Although paper, wood and bamboo are easier to decompose than plastics, utensils made of such materials don't change their nature - they are still disposable," said Greeners Action Sr. Public Affairs officer Beatrice Siu Wing-Yin via SCMP.

Industry Leaders Doubt Takeaway Container Lending

Various industry leaders doubt the idea of restaurants lending takeaway containers. One of them is President Simon Wong Kit-Lung of the Institute Of Dining Professionals.

He explained that there's no denying that the effort has been introduced with good intentions. However, it will not be easy to execute at scale.

Simon stated that the takeaway container lending effort would require many resources, especially logistics. In order for it to work, customers should also be willing to return the boxes themselves.
