OpenAI has announced the establishment of a safety and security committee and is currently in the process of training a new AI model to replace the GPT-4 system that powers its ChatGPT chatbot.

In a recent blog post, the San Francisco startup announced the formation of a committee that will guide the full board regarding important safety and security matters related to its projects and operations.

OpenAI Creates Oversight Board

ChatGPT virtual assistant's developer has shared news about the initiation of training for its upcoming model. The company expressed its excitement for the potential of these systems to elevate their capabilities and propel them towards the realm of artificial general intelligence (AGI), a type of AI that rivals or surpasses human intelligence, according to AP News.

According to the blog post, Sam Altman will be joined by Bret Taylor, Adam D'Angelo, and Nicole Seligman on the safety committee. All three individuals are members of OpenAI's board of directors.

AI Safety

Following the dissolution of a previous team that addressed the long-term risks of AI, OpenAI has now established a new oversight team. Prior to this, the team leaders, Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, made public their departures from the Microsoft-backed startup.

Leike expressed concerns about OpenAI's prioritization of flashy products over their safety culture and processes.

Expressing his sentiments on social media platform X, Altman expressed his sadness over Leike's departure and emphasized that OpenAI still has a lot of work ahead.

OpenAI's processes and safeguards will be evaluated by a safety group over the next 90 days. The group will then provide their recommendations to the company's board. OpenAI plans to share an update regarding the recommendations it has adopted in the near future.

AI safety has become a central topic of discussion, particularly as the increasingly sophisticated models behind applications like ChatGPT continue to evolve. AI product developers are curious about the potential arrival of AGI and the associated risks it may bring.
