A New York couple who enjoy the hobby of "magnet fishing" claim to have discovered a safe submerged in a New York lake, which they believe contains approximately $100,000.

New York Couple Retrieves Safe Loaded with Damaged $100 Bills

James Kane and Barbie Agostini successfully retrieved a safe from a lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens on Friday using a rope and magnet.

The couple mentioned that the safes they come across are typically devoid of any valuables, except for a few empty plastic baggies that once contained money.

However, once they managed to open this one, it became evident that they had come across a significant find.

After opening the secure box, they claimed to have discovered it filled with stacks of $100 bills that had been damaged by water, BBC reported.

It remains uncertain whether they will be able to redeem the bills, but there is a possibility that the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing will honor their money.

According to the BEP website, if over 50 percent of the currency can be identified, individuals who hold the notes lawfully can receive a redemption at full value.

Couple's Magnet Fishing Videos Reveal Hidden NYC Artifacts, Weapons

The couple launched a YouTube channel last June named 'Let's Get Magnetic', showcasing their impressive collection of finds from different bodies of water in the New York City region.

In a recent video, a variety of items were discovered, including watches, jewelry pieces, old New York City subway tokens, and even a small pistol.

According to DailyMail, the couple expressed their concerns about the potential legal consequences of possessing items like weapons and safes filled with discarded cash, after conducting thorough research.

Whenever they come across items that may be linked to criminal activity, they have developed a routine of contacting the police to ensure they do not disrupt any potential evidence.

Kane stated that the New York Police Department conducted an investigation into the safety of the area and determined that there were no issues.
