China warned the European Union regarding its tariffs for Chinese electric vehicles, which are expected to be levied in July. However, Beijing said that it is prepared to retaliate against the provisional tariffs of the EU.
China Warns EU About Its Chinese EV Tariffs
The South China Morning Post reported that on Monday, June 3, a Chinese automobile association met with the EU's Department of Trade in Brussels. During their discussion, Chinese automakers were told that the EU would impose the provisional duties on July 4.
However, the tariff rate wasn't disclosed during the meeting. The European Union is also investigating the subsidies for the Chinese EV industry.
"This is an ongoing investigation, we are not going to comment on it. We will be in a position to announce some provisional elements on it quite soon," explained EU trade spokesman Olof Gill.
China Vows To Retaliate Against EU
China said it is ready to retaliate against the EU if it continues imposing the new EV tariffs against Chinese-made cars, as reported by Asia Times.
The European Union originally scheduled an announcement on June 5 to disclose details about its provisional tariffs for Chinese electric cars. However, this was postponed to June 10. Officials explained that it was delayed to prepare for the election (June 6-June 9).
Beijing is asking for a truce with the bloc. However, it warned that if the tariffs are implemented, China might target the EU's aviation and agricultural culture as retaliation.
