‘Blurred Lines’: Robert Thicke's pop consciousness explosion?

By

Robert Thicke's recording career was about 10 years long now. He spent most of his career as "a sensuous crooner with the occasional crossover hit", according to Nekesa Mumbi Moody of Huffington Post.

"Blurred Lines" comprised 11 tracks. These tracks were tightly woven, with a sprinkle of different flavors such as R&B, electronic dance music, and between-the-sheets grooves. Each track was written or co-written by Thicke himself. However, he enlisted the help of Pharell for "Blurred Lines". In addition, Dr. Luke and will.i.am, among others, contributed as well.

"Thicke has exploded into pop's consciousness with 'Blurred Lines': It's the undeniable song of the summer and may turn out to be the single of the year," stated Moody's post. "With "Blurred Lines," Thicke's path to music's top spot should be clear from now on," Moody added.

Thicke's success and gain would hopefully add to the slow growth that the US music business experiences. The expected annual growth of the music industry was just over 1% until 2017, according to a new report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). By that year, the physical market will be worth US$1.4 billion due to a "terminal decline" in CD sales. Assuming the decline in revenue is at a steady rate, revenue from this sector will be more than US$500 million in 2023. The digital market, on the other hand, would grow from US$3.6 billion last year to US$4.6 billion in 2017. Meanwhile, the concert scene was forecasted to grow from US$8.61 billion last year to US$8.9 billion this year and US$9.2 billion next year.
