Recall, Microsoft's AI-powered PC screenshot feature will be off by default. The tech giant confirmed this after backlash against the new feature for Copilot+ PCs.
Microsoft's AI-powered PC Screenshot Feature Will Be Off by Default
CNBC reported that Microsoft is turning Recall off by default. This is unexpected given that the recall feature was one of the main features highlighted during a press briefing for the upcoming Copilot+ computers, which use AI computing.
"We are updating the set-up experience of Copilot+ PCs to give people a clearer choice to opt-in to saving snapshots using Recall," said Microsoft Windows Corporate VP Pavan Davuluri via Wired.
He added that users can proactively turn on the new Recall feature if they want to use it. This adjustment was made after security experts shared their concerns about the AI-powered screenshot capability.

Why Microsoft Recall Feature Concerns Experts
Microsoft's Recall feature is being criticized due to the security and privacy risks it poses. Before the new default feature was introduced, the screenshot capability silently stored screenshots of users' activities every five seconds.
Security experts said the Microsoft Recall functions could allow hackers to gain sensitive details like bank logins, passwords, and adult site visit history.
They clarified that Recall doesn't upload screenshots to the cloud but stores them on the user's personal computers. However, cybercriminals can still access them by gaining a temporary foothold on PCs with the Recall feature.
