Apple is facing a proposed class action lawsuit alleging it systematically underpaid over 12,000 female employees in California compared to their male counterparts.
New Lawsuit Accuses Apple of Underpaying Female Workers in California
According to Reuters, the suit filed in a San Francisco state court by two female employees claimed that women in Apple's engineering, marketing, and AppleCare divisions receive lower salaries than men with similar roles.
The lawsuit asserted that Apple determines its starting salaries based on previous job earnings or "pay expectations," which allegedly results in lower pay for women as employees typically provide figures slightly higher than their previous salaries.
Furthermore, the company's performance evaluation system, which influences raises and bonuses, is claimed to be biased against female employees. The two female employees who filed the proposed class action lawsuit have worked at Apple for over a decade.
Pay Equity of Apple
In a statement, Apple said it has maintained gender pay equity since 2017, partnering annually with an independent expert to review and adjust compensation to ensure fairness.
Despite this, the plaintiffs' lawyer argued that Apple's practices only widen gender pay gaps, which is a "no-win situation" for female Apple employees.
