Based on predictions shared by Comscore on Sunday (June 16), Pixar's animated sequel 'Inside Out 2' raked in an impressive $155 million in North American ticket sales over the weekend.
'Inside Out 2' Breaks Box Office Records with Global Debut
This debut is the talk of the town, surpassing even last summer's blockbuster "Barbie" which had a massive $162 million opening weekend.
It's also the biggest debut of the year, beating out 'Dune: Part Two' which launched with $82.5 million in March, USA Today reported.
Globally, 'Inside Out 2' raked in an impressive $140 million during its opening, resulting in a staggering $295 million worldwide.
The results provided a significant uplift to the North American box office, which, year to date, has seen a decline of 24% from 2023, reaching an estimated $3.086 billion through Sunday.
'Inside Out 2' Earns Rave Reviews with New Emotions
Kelsey Mann helmed 'Inside Out 2,' which continues Riley's story as she enters her teenage years. That signifies the addition of new emotions, including Anxiety (Maya Hawke) and Envy (Ayo Edebiri), to Joy's (Amy Poehler) party.
The film received high praise from critics, with a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences also rated it highly, giving it an A CinemaScore, indicating that it is likely to have staying power beyond its opening weekend.
Amidst the summer break for children and a lack of new releases until "Despicable Me 4" hits theaters on the Fourth of July, 'Inside Out 2' is beginning its journey.
In a story of Fortune, the production budget for 'Inside Out 2' is estimated to be around $200 million, not including the significant marketing expenses.
Heading into the weekend, it was projected to make around $90 million, similar to the opening weekend of 'Inside Out' in June 2019.
That would have been seen as a remarkable accomplishment, surpassing even the opening weekends of March releases like 'Dune: Part Two' and 'Godzilla x Kong.'
