Parents Shield Children from Gunfire at Splash Pad, Suffer Seven Wounds

Micayla and Eric Coughlin were enjoying a family outing with their two young children, aged 2 and 7 months, when they suddenly heard gunshots around 5 p.m. on Saturday (June 15).

They had just finished getting ice cream and were on their way to the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad, Daily Mail reported.

Micayla and Eric sustained a combined total of seven gunshot wounds while bravely protecting their children. They are currently receiving medical care at a nearby hospital.

Shooter with Mental Health Struggles Identified as Michael William Nash

The shooter has been identified as Michael William Nash, a 42-year-old resident of Shelby Township, according to Stephen Huber, spokesperson for the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

According to AP, Sheriff Mike Bouchard stated on Saturday evening that the individual responsible for the incident had no previous criminal record, but was privately dealing with significant mental health difficulties, according to the sheriff.

According to authorities, a total of nine individuals were shot by Michael William Nash, 42, at the splash pad on Saturday evening.

Nash eventually fled, seemingly forgetting his gun in the process. Investigators successfully traced the suspect's whereabouts to the residence in Shelby Township, where he resided with his mother, using the registration information of the weapon.

Upon the arrival of law enforcement, a vehicle was discovered that bore a striking resemblance to the one associated with the individual responsible for the shooting.

Law enforcement officers surrounded the residence and later gained entry, discovering that the individual in question had passed away.

According to Nash's neighbors, his father passed away two years ago and he has been living with his mother, who has been traveling across the United States.
