The state of Kansas has filed a lawsuit against Pfizer, accusing the pharmaceutical giant of misleading the public about its COVID-19 vaccine.
According to Reuters, the lawsuit filed in Thomas County District Court claimed that Pfizer made false statements regarding the vaccine's effectiveness and concealed potential risks, violating the Kansas Consumer Protection Act.
Kansas Sues Pfizer
Kansas noted that Pfizer concealed information about the vaccine's potential to cause pregnancy issues, such as miscarriages and heart inflammation conditions, including myocarditis and pericarditis, since early 2021.
However, Pfizer countered it by saying its vaccine statements were accurate and based on science and called the lawsuit baseless. In June 2021, the FDA included a warning on the vaccine label about myocarditis and pericarditis, saying these side effects are uncommon and mostly affect adolescent boys and young men.
Kansas further alleged that Pfizer misrepresented the vaccine's effectiveness against new virus variants and its ability to prevent illness and transmission despite being developed with German partner BioNTech.
COVID Vaccines' Link With Miscarriage
A similar lawsuit by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton against Pfizer is still ongoing. Pfizer previously said that this case is meritless.
A 2023 US National Institutes of Health study also found no connection between COVID vaccines and miscarriage. Attorney General Kris Kobach said on Monday that other states collaborating with Kansas' probes are also expected to file similar lawsuits.
