Juneteenth or "June" and "Nineteenth" commemorates the liberation of enslaved African-American people, originating from Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger's proclamation in Texas in 1865, occurred two and a half years after the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation was issued, according to The New York Times.

Now, this federal holiday, celebrated annually on June 19 since 2021, grants many Americans a paid day off to reflect on its importance.

For this year's Juneteenth, while most banks and post offices will be closed to commemorate the end of slavery in the US, major restaurant chains, grocery stores, and retail giants like Target, Walmart, and Costco will remain open.

What's Open, What's Closed on Juneteenth

According to USA Today, here is what's open and closed on Juneteenth this year.

Only Capital One Cafes are open for banks and post offices, while all major banks (Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, Citibank, JPMorgan Chase) and U.S. Postal Service facilities are closed.

Similarly, the stock market will also be closed.

Pharmacies like Walgreens will be open during regular hours. Most Rite Aid locations will open, but customers should check the website for specific holiday hours.

For shipping services, UPS will offer pickup and delivery services, and UPS Store locations will remain open. Similarly, FedEx will offer pickup and delivery services, with FedEx Office locations remaining open.
