A new swallowable technology are poised to revolutionize gastrointestinal health monitoring. Developed by Endiatx, these tiny and swallowable robots, called PillBots, are entering clinical trials and aim for US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval.

If the trials become successful, they could be available commercially as early as 2026, according to NewsNation.

How PillBots Work

PillBots perform non-invasive endoscopies using advanced cameras and sensors, providing an alternative to traditional upper endoscopy (EGD) procedures.

They allow doctors to examine the stomach remotely through a telemedicine call, eliminating the need for sedation and extensive fasting required from the patient.

Once ingested, the PillBots navigate the body using patented multi-pumpjet propulsion, which doctors can remotely control. Illuminated by the robots' LED system, they make an internal live feed and the recorded video is saved for AI-enchanced analysis later.

Endiatx CEO and co-founder Torrey Smith has personally demonstrated the PillBot functionality by swallowing it over 40 times.

Endiatx Raises $7 Million in Funding to Support Development of PillBots

The swallowable robot deactivates and exits the gastrointestinal system naturally within 24 hours. Endiatx has raised $7 million in funding to support the development of Pillbots.

The PillBots can transmit high-resolution video at 2.3 megapixels per second, with plans to significantly improve this quality. Endiatx aims to make these mini robots affordable and accessible, potentially offering over-the-counter purchases at around $50 per PillBot.

NewsNation reported that the company's next project could be PillSurgeon, an expansion on the PillBot with tools to collect microbiome samples, remove polyps, perform biopsies, and cauterize bleeds.
