Disney-Pixar's 'Inside Out 2' is still reigning supreme at the domestic box office, with an estimated $100 million expected to be made in its second weekend in theaters.
'Inside Out 2' Weekend Earnings Surge to $100 Million
The impressive tally was revised from Saturday's estimate, which projected the animated movie to earn $98 million over the weekend. If the estimated weekend earnings of $100 million remain accurate, Inside Out 2's total earnings will reach $355.1 million by Sunday (June 23).
According to Forbes, the sequel to the 2015 Best Animated Feature Oscar winner Inside Out, Inside Out 2 had a phenomenal opening weekend in North American theaters, grossing an impressive $155 million from Friday to Sunday (June 21-23).
Inside Out 2 raked in an impressive $30 million on Friday, showcasing its strong box office performance. If the estimated $100 million weekend holds up, Inside Out 2 will achieve a remarkable feat by surpassing $90 million in its second weekend, a milestone not seen since Barbie in 2023. Inside Out 2 is currently being screened in a staggering 4,400 theaters.
'Inside Out 2' Nears 'Incredibles 2' Record
Now, Inside Out 2, with only a 35% drop from its $154 million domestic debut, is set to give 'The Incredibles 2' ($1.2 billion) a run for its money as the highest-grossing Pixar release of all time.
It could also guide the esteemed animation factory towards creating additional sequels. One of the films in its upcoming lineup is 'Toy Story 5,' set to be released in 2026, Click Orlando reported.
The release of Inside Out 2 was eagerly anticipated by theater owners. However, it also served as a stark reminder to exhibitors of the unpredictable nature of the movie business in recent years.
Since the pandemic, there has been a surge in ticket sales for movies like 'Barbie,' 'Spider-Man: No Way Home,' and 'Top Gun: Maverick,' reaching record heights.
However, there has also been an increase in the duration of fallow periods between box-office sensations. The ticket sales during Memorial Day last month were the lowest they have been in thirty years.
Part of the decline in 2024 can be attributed to the reshuffling of release schedules due to the strikes by writers and actors last year.
A notable film that made its debut over the weekend was 'The Bikeriders,' a motorcycle gang drama directed by Jeff Nichols. Originally scheduled to be released in 2023, the film had to be postponed due to the actors' strike.
