The city of Detroit is implementing measures to prevent incidents where individuals are trapped inside gas stations, following a tragic incident involving a fatal shooting during a customer dispute.
Detroit Bans Remote Door Locks After Deadly Gas Station Incident
Police claimed that the shooting was partly a result of the clerk's decision to lock the door while being protected by the glass. According to AP, a new ordinance was passed by the Detroit City Council on Tuesday, which would prohibit employees from using a remote button to lock the door.
According to The Detroit News, the new policy would be applicable to businesses that have protective glass for their employees.
In May 2023, a $3.80 electronic purchase that went unresolved resulted in a violent incident. A video captured Samuel McCray using explicit language and adamantly stating his intention to exit a gas station with the items.
Three additional individuals joined the group just as clerk Al-Hassan Aiyash pressed a button, securing the door and trapping the four individuals inside.
Gas Station Shooting
Prosecutors have charged Samuel McCray, 27, with murder as well as attempted murder as new details have emerged. He entered a plea of not being guilty and was denied bond during his appearance in court in the past year.
The shooting took place in the early hours of Saturday morning. According to the prosecutor's office, McCray attempted to leave the gas station with items valued at less than $4 after his electronic purchase was declined. However, the clerk took action by locking the door.
According to witness David Langston, McCray allegedly made threats to harm everyone inside the gas station if the door wasn't unlocked.
Three individuals were shot, tragically resulting in the loss of one life. McCray is currently facing serious charges related to murder and attempted murder, The Mirror US via MSN reported.
Aiyash is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter. Their cases are still awaiting resolution.
