Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that Apple has set its sights on starting mass manufacturing of the upcoming "AirPods with camera modules" by 2026. This information follows a previous report by Bloomberg in February, which mentioned Apple's intentions to develop AirPods with cameras.
Infrared Camera Coming to AirPods?
According to Kuo's evaluation, the upcoming AirPods will include an infrared camera that bears resemblance to the one used by the Face ID system found in iPhones and iPads.
According to reports, Apple is aiming to have the camera-equipped AirPods seamlessly integrate with Vision Pro and upcoming Apple Vision headsets.
In addition, the report highlights that the IR camera on AirPods has the capability to detect changes in the surrounding environment. This could potentially allow for in-air gesture control, enhancing the interaction between humans and devices.
Kuo highlights that Foxconn has been chosen as the supplier for the IR camera that will be integrated with AirPods, indicating their role in the new product introduction (NPI).
According to reports, Foxconn has an annual capacity plan of 18-20 million units, which roughly translates to 10 million pairs of AirPods.
In February, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reported that Apple is exploring various wearable form factor ideas, including AirPods with cameras.
Speculation Surrounding AirPods Health-Tracking Features
The company is also considering the development of smart glasses that are similar to Meta Ray-Bans, along with a smart ring and future iterations of the Apple Watch, 9to5Mac reported.
If Apple put cameras into its earbuds, it would align with the ongoing innovation pattern for the tech giant.
Apple has continuously enhanced its iconic white earbuds, transforming them from a symbol of simplicity during the iPod era to a more advanced and intelligent accessory.
Throughout the years, Apple has incorporated various features like wireless connectivity, noise cancellation, head tracking, touch controls, and voice commands.
There has been speculation about the possibility of AirPods adding health-tracking features, although Apple has not yet introduced this functionality. It seems that incorporating fitness tracking into its Powerbuds Pro was not a successful move for Amazfit in 2021.
Even well-known fitness brands like Fitbit and Garmin have chosen not to incorporate advanced health-tracking technology into users' ears, according to Gizmodo.
