Alessandro Manfredi, the global chief marketing officer of Dove, has recently announced his departure from Unilever, the parent company of the soap brand.

According to Washington Examiner, this decision comes after two decades with the company, during which Dove faced criticism for several controversial marketing campaigns. Additionally, the new leadership at Unilever is aiming to enhance the brand's competitiveness.

Dove's Real Beauty Executive Alessandro Manfredi Resigns

Manfredi has been instrumental in spearheading the soap company's "Campaign for Real Beauty," which was launched in 2004 with the aim of challenging the prevalence of digital alterations and unattainable beauty ideals in our society.

"Even the most beautiful love stories come to an end. A few months ago, I have decided to leave Unilever and the past few days were my last as the leader of the Dove brand. I am leaving with a deep feeling of Pride and Gratitude," Manfredi wrote on LinkedIn.

The company has faced criticism for its recent partnerships and marketing campaigns that some consider to be overly focused on social issues.

The departure occurred one year after Unilever's CEO, Hein Schumacher, assumed leadership of the company in July 2023. During his tenure, Schumacher expressed his disappointment with the company's competitiveness and emphasized the need for overall performance improvement.

Unilever's Dove Faces Controversy in Previous Years

In 2022, Dove launched a campaign to promote Dove Dry Spray, focusing on body positivity and challenging harmful stereotypes associated with armpits.

Dove recently featured a confident woman on Instagram, proudly embracing her natural beauty and self-expression. In a bold move, the Dove campaign took to New York City billboards with their powerful message, using the hashtag #freethepits.

In September 2023, Dove collaborated with Zyahna Bryant, a prominent advocate for body positivity, to launch a groundbreaking campaign called "Campaign For Size Freedom." This initiative aimed to promote the idea of embracing all body types and challenging societal beauty standards.

Bryant recently took to Instagram to announce her collaboration with Dove. In her video, she expressed her strong belief in the importance of amplifying the voices and experiences of marginalized individuals and communities.

The campaign sparked a wave of criticism and prompted threats of boycott.

In February, during the Super Bowl, a television advertisement by a beauty product company showcased a montage of young girls participating in sports.

However, 2024 Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy criticized the company for its support of transgender athletes, accusing it of publicly celebrating men competing in women's sports.

In 2017, Dove faced backlash and issued an apology for a controversial social media post. The post depicted a black woman removing her dark-colored shirt, revealing a white woman in a light-colored shirt. The company expressed regret for not adequately representing women of color.
