MamataBanerjee, the Trinamool Congress chief, revealed that he had found angel investors to provide the much needed improvement for the troubled rural healthcare system in Bengal, India. Calcutta Angels, a group of mostly high-networth individuals and other private investors, had committed funds for a start-up venture.
Ikure, a joint venture between Calcutta Angels and I3N, is to set up mutilple health centers in villages throughout the state. Webel Venture had aslo committed some funds for the project. Ikure is currently promoted by two former Oracle personnel Pankaj Panthak and Sujay Santra. The firm had already commenced pilot initiatives in Birbhum and West Midnapore.
"It was a big challenge to set up a rural healthcare chain here. But we got support from Angel investors and Webel. As far as we know, this is the first Angel-funded project in Bengal. The initial response for our pilot project is very good," Sujay Santra said.
