All you have to do is look at the amount of hoopla and money surrounding the Super Bowl, which was watched by almost 124 million people, to understand that sports and competition are electric. Over 25 million people viewed the National College Football Championship, and nearly 5 billion people engaged in the 2022 World Cup. Sports excite and ignite the participants, the spectators, the coaches, and the world. It's no wonder that coaching is filled with some of the most passionate individuals in the professional arena.
While the passion runs deep and the rewards are vast, coaching certainly comes with its own set of challenges. Two of the biggest challenges facing coaches are a lack of time and a lack of viable workspace solutions (of course, the pressure and desire to win are up there, too). Frankly, coaches are overextended. During practice time, coaches teach skills, which often leads to a lack of time for game planning and strategy instruction with athletes.
While workspace software has proven invaluable for traditional businesses, there is a definite lack of essential resources for coaches. Current software services that are available for coaches are often fragmented and hard to navigate because they aren't created for coaches and sports teams, resulting in greater inefficiencies and higher costs. The current market also lacks the tools they need most, a solution for playbook creation, game planning and film review, and a dedicated community platform that caters specifically to coaches' unique needs.
That is where Clipboard Nation comes in. Its founder, Luvisia (Lou) Molenje, is creating a new standard for coaches with its innovative 'virtual war rooms.' These online collaboration spaces allow coaches to conduct strategy sessions that are crucial for team success. Unlike traditional methods where time and physical presence are required, virtual war rooms offer flexibility and accessibility, enabling coaches to meet and strategize anytime, from anywhere. This modern approach saves time and ensures that strategy sessions are as practical as possible.
Molenje points out that strategy sessions are a staple at higher levels of football, such as college and professional teams. However, for high school and youth coaches, these sessions are often rare due to time constraints. "High school coaches often work during the day and have additional jobs. They don't have the time to hold extensive strategy sessions in person," Molenje explains. "With Clipboard Nation, we are bridging that gap and providing a platform that supports both the teaching of fundamental skills and the communication of complex strategies."
Clipboard Nation's patented virtual war rooms have several key features that make them indispensable for coaches. Coaches can conference with players and coaches while simultaneously drawing plays. They can also save and share plays digitally, ensuring all team members can access the latest strategies. Videos are attached to plays for a more comprehensive understanding of strategies. Additionally, sessions can be recorded and shared, allowing players to review and understand their roles and responsibilities.
The virtual war room features solve foundational problems for coaches, making communicating strategies easier and ensuring all team members are on the same page. Molenje adds, "We plan to make this a tool available for sideline communication. In football, coaches have headsets and communicate over dedicated channels (offense, defense, special teams, etc...). We have modeled our war rooms after that, and teams will be able to use the web conferencing feature for sideline communications during actual live games."
Clipboard Nation's forum features serve as a repository for coaching knowledge, similar to platforms like Google Teams, Slack and others. Coaches can pose questions and receive peer responses, enhancing their learning and development. Private forums are also available within the team for secure collaboration, ensuring that strategies and plays remain confidential while enabling effective communication.
Another standout feature is the personal playbook, which differs from team playbooks because it provides a space for coaches to store their intellectual property. This feature is particularly valuable for coaches who move between teams or roles and ensures that coaches' hard-earned strategies and plays are always accessible.
Unlike their competitors, such as Hudl, which focuses primarily on film services, Clipboard Nation emphasizes both synchronous and asynchronous communication and collaboration. Molenje notes, "Our competitors are not really in this space. Hudl allows for play drawing, but they don't have the concept of a virtual war room. We integrate those 'essential business tools' into coaching, including a shared whiteboard. In a physical war room, coaches can grab a marker and diagram a concept. Our virtual whiteboard works the same way with tools to draw and adapt plays that feel like markers. They can also save sessions and attach contextual videos. We offer a solution that fundamentally changes how coaches prepare for games."
The market alone for football coaches is vast, with over 600 colleges, 17,000 high schools, 12,000 middle schools and 10s of thousands of youth football coaches. In the future, Clipboard Nation will expand and support a variety of other sports as well, making it a versatile tool for other teams and coaches. So far, Molenje and his virtual war room tool have captured over 2K coaches/users.
Since its inception in 2022, Molenje has bootstrapped over $350K and hopes to engage investors and raise funds to increase the company's marketing and sales efforts as well as build their second MVP based on current user feedback.
Clipboard Nation and Molenje are transforming the football world and coaching its innovative virtual war rooms. By addressing the unique challenges coaches face and providing a comprehensive suite of features, they have significantly raised the bar in sports technology. As Molenje aptly shares, "We're not just offering a tool; we're providing a solution that modernizes coaching and game prep. With conferencing abilities that resemble sideline communications, Clipboard Nation can go straight for planning sessions onto the sideline."
