Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of cooperation with Italy during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Monday. AP News shared that the countries specifically highlighted the historical value of the Silk Road trade route that once connected the two nations.
Xi's call for collaboration comes as Italy navigates its relationship with China after withdrawing from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in December 2023.
Despite Italy's exit from the BRI, a new agreement signed on Sunday, July 28, paves the way for an improved trade and cooperation between China and Italy.
China-Italy Bilateral Ties
Meloni, on her first visit to China as prime minister, is participating in a five-day state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for economic partnership.
The Belt and Road Initiative, one of Xi's hallmark policies, seeks to develop global infrastructure to boost trade and deepen China's international ties. In this, Xi referenced the ancient Silk Road, stating that there is a historical relationship between China and Italy, with longstanding interactions that have greatly contributed to the exchange of culture and knowledge between the East and the West, promoting human development and progress.
In response, Italy's PM Meloni acknowledged her country's potential role in fostering balanced trade relationships between China and the European Union. She also recognized China's important role in global diplomacy, pointing out that China's influence is crucial in addressing international issues.
For now, Meloni returns Xi's call for ongoing dialogue and cooperation between two countries.
