Restaurant chain Waffle House has announced that it will be adding a surcharge of $0.50 to egg items on its menu due to the ongoing bird flu.

The addition of the surcharge took effect on Monday across Waffle House's more than 2,000 locations.

Waffle House assured in a statement that the surcharge is temporary, according to NBC News.

"While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived, we cannot predict how long this shortage will last," the statement added.

Bird flu has been blamed as the reason why egg prices have more than doubled compared to prices in 2023. According to AP News, the Department of Agriculture predicts that prices will balloon even more this year.

News of Waffle House's additional surcharge has led people online to compare egg prices in their area. On Reddit, a user asked, "I'm getting 15dozen for $76.00 right now. What's everyone else's prices looking like."

"145 here in Denver for the 15 dzn," one reply read.

"$62 for 15dzn in north Georgia," another reply stated.

"Yep, up to $120 per case (15 dozen) for us. Used to be about 30 bucks 2 years ago, and I heard it's about to get worse," one commenter noted. "Supply is WAY down due to the bird flu outbreaks and demand has not changed."
