Mark Carney, the former Governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has emerged victorious in the Liberal Party leadership race, securing his position as the next Prime Minister of Canada.
Carney, 59, emerged victorious in the party's leadership race, securing a decisive 85.9% of the vote.
He replaces Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January after nearly a decade in office. Trudeau will continue serving as prime minister until Carney is officially sworn in.
Carney's victory comes at a time of heightened tension between Canada and the United States, particularly over trade relations.
US President Donald Trump's trade war and threats of annexing Canada have left many Canadians feeling uncertain about their country's future.
According to AP, Carney, who is widely respected for his leadership during financial crises, has taken a strong stance against Trump's policies.
"There is someone who is trying to weaken our economy," Carney said. "Donald Trump has put unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell and how we make a living. He's attacking Canadian families, workers, and businesses, and we cannot let him succeed, and we won't."
Carney vowed to keep retaliatory tariffs in place against the US until Canada receives the respect it deserves. "We didn't ask for this fight. But Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves," Carney said. He added that in trade, as in hockey, Canada will prevail.

Mark Carney to Lead Canada Amid Rising Nationalism and US Tensions
Mark Carney has gained recognition for his ability to navigate economic crises. He played a key role in Canada's swift recovery from the 2008 global financial crisis, earning praise during his tenure as the head of the Bank of Canada.
His time as the Governor of the Bank of England further cemented his reputation as a skilled financial leader.
The Canadian political landscape has been shifting, especially in light of ongoing tensions with the US under Trump's leadership.
Many Canadians have become more nationalistic, reacting to Trump's trade threats and his comments about potentially making Canada the 51st US state, USA Today said.
This rising sentiment has helped bolster the Liberal Party's chances in the upcoming federal election.
Carney is positioning himself as the leader who can effectively manage Canada's relationship with its southern neighbor. "The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country," Carney stated.
"If they succeed, they would destroy our way of life." He also emphasized the difference between Canada and America, calling Canada a "mosaic," while describing the US as a "melting pot."
As the leader of the Liberal Party, Carney is expected to call for a federal election soon, either by his own decision or through a no-confidence vote in Parliament.
Trudeau, who has urged Liberal supporters to stay engaged, said, "This is a nation-defining moment. Democracy is not a given. Freedom is not a given. Even Canada is not a given."
