Cabot Creamery has voluntarily recalled over 1,700 pounds of its sea-salted Extra Creamy Premium Butter after testing revealed elevated levels of coliform bacteria.

The recall, which affects seven states, was initiated after the discovery of the contaminant, which is commonly found in fecal matter from humans and animals.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has labeled the recall as a Class III, meaning the health risk to consumers is low.

The affected butter was distributed in Arkansas, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.

According to NY Times, the recall specifically involves 189 cases, or 1,701 pounds, of 8-ounce sticks of butter, all marked with a best-by date of September 9, 2025, and the lot number 090925-055.

The company said that only 17 packages, or 34 sticks, were sold to consumers, all of which were in Vermont. No other Cabot products were impacted by the recall.

Cabot Butter Recall: 99.5% Recovered Before Reaching Consumers

The recall comes after "finished-product testing revealing an elevated level of coliform bacteria," according to Agri-Mark, Cabot's parent company.

Despite this, there have been no reported illnesses or complaints linked to the affected butter, and the company has assured consumers that the potential health risk is minimal.

Agri-Mark also noted that 99.5% of the potentially contaminated butter was successfully recovered before it reached consumers.

Coliform bacteria, typically found in the digestive tracts of people and animals, as well as in soil, plants, and water sources, are not usually harmful by themselves, AP News said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that while coliform bacteria can indicate the presence of harmful germs, they generally do not cause illness.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled butter are urged to dispose of it. Although the company did not provide specific instructions, it is generally advised to discard any recalled product for safety.

Agri-Mark confirmed its commitment to food safety, stating that it is constantly monitoring its products to ensure quality and compliance with safety standards.

As of now, the recall remains active, and officials continue to ensure that no other products are at risk.
