Walmart spokesperson Randy Hargrove confirmed news from a leaked memo to gay news blog Towleroad that the multinational retail company has made "business decision" to standardize inclusion of family members, including domestic partners, to health insurance. According to Forbes news magazine, the Arkansas-based company relayed changes to its 2014 health plan to full-time staff via postcards. Hargrove said that the memo was addressed to senior management should the need to answer questions from staff arises.
The memo also explained the need to amend changes. "By developing a single definition for all Walmart associates in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, we are able to ensure consistency for associates across our markets," the memo read. Hargrove also added that the new health care policy includes plan for vision care, 100% coverage for some major surgeries like hip replacement, and incentives to encourage its employees to stop smoking.
The Arkansas-headquartered company recently reported a quarterly earnings report ending July 31 total revenue of USD469.162 billion. The company also recorded assets valuing at USD203.105 billion.
