The Pentagon said it still encouraged foreign companies to invest in the US. The assurance came from a top official of the agency. However, he acknowledged that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) would be reviewing foreign acquisitions of US firms more thoroughly.
Pentagon's CFIUS Representative Brett Lambert told reporters, "If you have a deal that is in the interest of the U.S. economy and does not impinge on national security, we will approve it." Lambert said that the CFIUS took longer to review the proposed deals due to the complex nature of the transactions. He did not, however, elaborate specific cases that were being reviewed by the CFIUS.
He added that the interest in US companies by foreign investors remained robust. He said the CFIUS would most likely be reviewing more transactions in the next few years, but stressed the importance of the national interest.
"You have foreign capital that wants to come in, which we want, which we encourage. The question is how do we allow that foreign capital to come in while protecting national security," Lambert added.
