Jose Padilha's remake of the 1987 sci-fi thriller RoboCop released its first trailer Thursday. In the latest update of the highly-successful movie franchise, Joel Kinnaman played the role of Officer Alex Murphy who was later turned into a robot to fight criminals. Kinnaman follows the footstep of Peter Weller who played the role of the human-cyborg in the first two films.
While fans of the original RoboCop don't look too kindly on the matte black armor of the new version, the remake featured an all-star cast. Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman, Samuel Jackson and Abbie Cornish have teamed up with Joel Kinnaman in the latest offering. Whether the new RoboCop will reap the same success of its predecessors, it would still remain to be seen when it hits movie theaters in February next year.
RoboCop 1 belonged to the top 20 most successful movies in 1987. It grossed more than USD 8 million in its opening weekend and more than USD 53 million in North America alone. Meanwhile, RoboCop 2 debuted second at the box office. Its domestic run earned close to USD 46 million when it was released in 1990.
