The woman who revealed that New York mayoralty hopeful Anthony Weiner sent her lewd messages online showed up in his primary party. Sydney Leathers was dressed in a red outfit when she blocked the restaurant entrance where Weiner was. To avoid a confrontation, Weiner had to go through a fast food restaurant nearby, delaying his concession speech for over thirty minutes.
Leathers said she felt obligated to be there. "I was shocked that he was so high in the polls before the scandal happened. It was shocking to me, knowing the type of person he is," she told ABCNews. Weiner only got 5% of the Democratic vote in the recently-concluded New York primary.
Despite the scandals, Weiner was an early frontrunner in the New York mayoralty polls. In July, he was able to raise USD 829,000 in campaign contributions. Based on records gathered by the NY Daily News, this was more than what the other mayoralty hopefuls received from May to June. He entered the mayoralty race in May with the USD 4.2 million he had already gathered before quitting Congress over a sexting scandal two years ago.
