Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co announced that it would be selling 29 of its stores. Twenty-three of the stores were located in South Carolina and the rest were in Georgia. Bi-Lo, another grocery market chain, would be buying 22 of the stores. North Carolina-based supermarket chain Harris Teeter would be acquiring the remaining stores. No stores were expected to close shop after acquisition, Piggy Wiggly said. No financial terms were disclosed about the deal.
Piggy Wiggly is based in Charleston, South Carolina. Eleven of the stores included in the sale were located in Charleston. That would leave only about ten stores in the Charleston area. According to the Christian Science Monitor, stiffer competition in the grocery store segment was seen as one of the reasons for the store sales.
The Piggy Wiggly website revealed that it has over 600 stores in 17 states nationwide. An affiliate of C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc, Piggy Wiggly was ranked in 2010 by Forbes magazine as the tenth largest privately held firm in the US.
