A source told Bloomberg that Marc Weinstock was removed from his position as Head of Marketing in Sony Corp's film unit. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because Sony was said to have no intentions of announcing the removal.
According to the source, Weinstock was removed as movies from Sony's entertainment unit had failed to make box office records. Sony's investors had showed concern in the past months about the unit's poor performance. It can be recalled that in August, Sony's Tokyo headquarters denied investor Daniel Loeb's proposal to sell its entertainment business. Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer Kazuo Hirai also promised investors that the company would be more transparent about its financial performance.
This year, the ticket sales of Sony in the US dropped 32% following movies like "After Earth" and "White House Down" that failed at the box office. Weinstock still has not commented on the report. Earlier, the website Deadline.com reported that he may still work at Sony but in a diminished capacity.
