Fixing Metro-North Railroad may take three weeks

By

Train commuters had to stand as Metro-North Railroad trains were filled to the brim on the New Haven Line. An electrical cable failure yesterday disrupted the service from Connecticut to New York and repairs could take as long as three weeks.

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the operator of Metro-North, revealed that diesel trains plied every thirty minutes today to accommodate commuters. However, even with buses supplementing the train service, only a third of the regular commuters of Metro North was accommodated.

According to Consolidated Edison Inc, electricity supplier for the New York metropolitan area, they were still arranging for a temporary replacement for the failed cable. The backup 138-kilovolt feeder which would have done the job could not be used as it was still under maintenance.

According to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority''s financial statements of the period ending June 30 this year, it had unaudited net capital assets of USD 54.957 million. Its operating revenues for the period increased by USD 51.2 million compared to the previous year. Toll revenues also increased by USD 47.8 million as a result of the toll increase in March.
